第三周第二堂课课前活动: I have never regretted helping the man, I did it to touch someone's heart!
I had forgotten about this incident that happened three years ago until a photo of me assisting the Chinese started doing the rounds on social media recently. I was leading in the Zheng-kai International Marathon held in China on March 28, 2010 when I saw this Chinese man calling upon his countrymen and fellow athletes to give him water. They just looked at him and passed. I was at ten Kilometre mark and was leading. The weather was hot and humid and even the most able athletes were getting dehydrated.
In fact, it is difficult to run a marathon without taking water whatever the weather conditions. He was not as fast as I was and was struggling to keep up with my pace because he did not want me to leave him. However, at 38 Kilometers, with a few kilometres to the finish line, I knew the Chinese was safe and I accelerated. But my colleague Emily Samoei (Another great Kenyan Athlete) who had passed me on one of the water stations was way ahead. I came second in the race. Of course winning that title was important to me but there was no way I could have left that dehydrated man unassisted.
At some point, I was worried that I had slowed down but I knew there would be another chance for me. I saw him after the race and he was very happy and appreciated my kind gesture. He even introduced me to his family who were equally thankful but we couldn’t communicate due to the language barrier. I met him one month later in another race. However, we didn’t run together. He still remembered me, ran to where I was and greeted me happily. I have never met him since then.
"I have never regretted helping the man. To me, he was not a stranger, but someone who needed my help. Said Kiplimo!"
I have won many titles including the Sabarmati India marathon 2010, Chile Santiago marathon 2010 among others. My message to Kenyans is that they should learn to live together as one. You do not have to know someone to help them. Help if you can, because it is a God given gift. Put yourself in the shoes of the other person.
Take for instance in my case, I am blessed with both hands, I would not claim I had done something to my God to deserve this. The Chinese had no hands. I do not think I am more special than him. Born in a family of eight in West Pokot County, I started running in 2004 while I was in primary school. But I used to run 1,500 metres race. I took too long distance running in 2007 and I now run 21 and 42 kilometres.
I am married to Fredrick Kiplimo who is also a runner and we are blessed with one child. My husband has been supportive of my career and we train together most of the time. I have faced many challenges in my running career but the major one is financial problems. Training facilities, running gear, healthcare and getting donors to support me is also a challenge. But I have pressed on. My role models are my fellow Kenyan athletes Lydia Jerome, Moses Kiptanui and Sharon Jerop.
